Oakland, CA Proposes to Open Residential Neighborhoods to All Types of Housing

To meet both the affordable housing market and population growth, Oakland is about to decide on letting everything from tiny houses on wheels and RVs to manufactured single wides into all R-Zoned neighborhoods.

If passed, and it's looking like it will, more CA cities may adopt these ordinances which could then spread to cities across the US. NIMBY could become a thing of the past if it does.

The Oakland Construction Innovation and Expanded Housing Options Ordinance would update the City’s zoning regulations to:

  • Allow residential occupancy of RVs and tiny homes on wheels on private property subject to certain health and safety standards
  • Allow mobile homes and manufactured homes in all zoning districts where residential uses are permitted
  • Establish density and open space regulations for efficiency dwelling units; and
  • Establish height regulations for modular construction.
